| Since 1995 philanthropists, Nancy and Walter Behrens of Lincoln City, Oregon, who believe in fostering the love of reading in children, have offered to pay each student for every book they read and provided field trips to many educational destinations.
The local principals liked this idea and very soon teachers, principals and parents were praising the program for its unqualified success. |

| The local library reported that their circulation in children's books had increased. Principals report students' test scores have risen every year since the program started. Last year the Foundation paid for bussing every class to Driftwood Library. The kids spent an hour looking through hundreds of books for those they really loved. They each received a library card and Teena, the librarian, had extra staff on hand. | |
